Diving into the lake for golf balls. Going to the pro golf shop. When Gordon Coleman, IE 46, stood on the lush grass of East Lake Golf Club, the home course of Bobby Jones, small memories surfaced one by one: diving for golf balls in disrepair under Coach Fred Lanoue, hearing stories of his father learning the game from Jones himself, going to the pro golf shop, and countless afternoons spent on those familiar fairways. Since then, Coleman has watched two of his daughters and their spouses play a round of golf on the same greens where he, his father, and Bobby Jones set foot.

The Yellow Jacket Who Made East Lake a Landmark

Bobby Jones, ME 1922, achieved what no one else has accomplished since: winning the Grand Slam in one calendar year. Jones was part of Tech’s golf team and won 13 majors in his career. His golfing legacy is sprinkled all over Atlanta today. The Atlanta Athletic Club and Atlanta History Center feature exhibits dedicated to his career, and the AAC houses the four trophies from his 1930 Grand Slam season. Jones’ golfing legacy began at East Lake, which remains, Atlanta’s oldest and most exclusive club.

Tech’s Standout Golfers

Few universities can claim a golf legacy as powerful as Georgia Tech’s, defined by legends like Grand Slam Champion Bobby Jones and generations of PGA standouts. With 68 top ten finishes and 13 PGA tour wins, David Duval, Mgt 93, is one of many standout golfers who attended the Institute. Others include Stewart Cink, Mgt 95, Matt Kuchar, Mgt 00, Andy Ogletree, BA 20, Tyler Strafaci, BA 21, Charlie Yates, GS 1935, and Coach Bruce Heppler. Collectively, these greats have won # competitions.
