Tech Traditions The Georgia School of Technology began classes on Oct. 8, 1888 with the School of Mechanical Engineering, and departments of Chemistry, Mathematics and English. Students were required to take four shop classes: wood, foundry, machine and blacksmith. The curriculum was oriented toward vocational training, and many legislators and Tech administrators believed the school could pay its bills by providing commercial shop work. By January 1889, 129 students registered to work toward the only degree offered, a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. Learn more about Tech's great traditions.
