| Description: | The Houston Area Georgia Tech Club invites you to join us for a networking event and dinner with guest speaker Dr. James Foley Topic: “The New Reality of Corporate Research and Development, and the Future of U.S. Competiveness” Corporate R&D has changed dramatically in the past decades, especially but not only in the computing and communications industries. The era of massive labs doing basic research, supported by companies with legislated or de-facto monopolies, is past. In some cases, the traditional long lead times between basic discovery and deployment and commercial success have shortened from many years to just a few years or even months. In the New Reality, we find corporate R&D being out-sourced, crowd-sourced, tax-sourced, internationalized, customerized, and acquired. In this new reality, companies look much more to universities for fundamental research, leading to an ever-greater interdependence between corporations, universities, and federal funding agencies. Many observers conclude that the future of U.S. competitiveness depends on how well this interdependence is recognized, managed and funded. Time: |
