21President's Scholarship Interviews
The President's Scholarship Interviews took place on Sunday, January 21, 2008, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Local alumni helped out by interviewing ten students from the greater Houston area who had been selected as semi-finalists in the Georgia Tech President's Scholarship competition. Two of our ten students were offered President's Scholarships, and one will be enrolling at Georgia Tech this fall.

August 2007

4Student Send-off Event
August 4, 2007 was the annual Student Send-off for incoming freshmen. The event was held at Champps Restaurant in Uptown Park. Alumni, incoming freshmen, current students and parents were all invited to get together for the send-off. This event allows students to meet each other and ask questions of current students. Parents are also able to meet each other, ask questions and establish a network for future communications.

27Team Buzz
Continuing in the great tradition of serving our community, the Georgia Tech Houston Club participated in Team Buzz events this year by volunteering at the Houston Food Bank on October 27, 2007.

A team of seven alumni and family worked a four hour shift at the Houston Food Bank. They were responsible for sorting through canned and box food donations, disposing of damaged food donations, sanitizing acceptable canned and boxed food donations, and repacking sorted, acceptable food donations for distribution to the public.

February 2008

21GA Tech Speaker & Dinner Event
Dr. Reginald DesRoches, Professor and Associate Chair in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, presented Natural Disasters and Critical Infrastructure Systems: Lessons from Hurricane Katrina at the Winter Chapter Meeting on February 21.

Dr. DesRoches had a discussion and slide presentation describing a variety of issues that came to light during and after this natural disaster. These lessons are now being reviewed and discussed to identify solutions to the problems. As residents of the Houston area, we were able to identify with the issues he presented and add our own hurricane/tropical storm experiences with Allison and Rita to the discussion.

We were also honored to have two of Dr. DesRoches' Ph.D. grad students in attendance. They graduated and are now professors at Rice University.

March 2008

16Houston Club Scholarship Interviews
Local Houston Club Scholarship interviews were conducted on March 16 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. These scholarships are one of the best tools the local club has to assist with the recruitment of outstanding students from the Houston area.

This year we had about $15,000 in Club funds with an additional $1,000 in matching money from the Alumni Association. We have four sources of money we can allocate each year: two endowed scholarships, the Sherman and Victoria Glass Scholarship Fund and the Blake Van Leer Scholarship Fund; $1,000 in matching scholarship funds from the Alumni Association and donations from alumni to our scholarship account.

If you would like to make a donation to the Houston Area Georgia Tech Club scholarship fund, please contact our secretary/treasurer, Wyatt McCormack, at wyattmcc@yahoo.com.

April 2008

Helping with the answers were a group of both young and old Georgia Tech alumni, as well as Beatriz R. Hegidio, Assistant Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
