McGuire Takes Ivan Allen Associate Dean Post

Peter McGuire

Peter McGuire, a professor in the School of Literature, Communication and Culture, became associate dean of the Ivan Allen College in August.

"His expertise in the analysis of digital media, multimedia project management and distance learning will prove to be an invaluable asset to the college. In addition, his lengthy experience as a faculty member at Georgia Tech also provides him with a keen awareness of the needs of the college’s undergraduates and curriculum," Dean Sue Rosser says of McGuire, who replaced Richard Barke as associate dean. Barke returned to the public policy faculty.

McGuire joined the Tech faculty in 1975 after receiving his PhD at Brown University. He rose through the professorial ranks in the School of Literature, Communication and Culture and served as director of continuing education, graduate studies and of the joint program in computational media before becoming associate chair.

He also has served on the executive board of the Academic Senate, the Provost’s Committee on Assessment of the Core Curriculum, the Undergraduate Learning Center Committee and the Advisory Committee on the Humanities for the Board of Regents.

"Liberal arts education is an idea that’s come of age at Georgia Tech," McGuire says. "I am excited to be a part of an expanding initiative involving curriculum, undergraduate studies and information technology."

McGuire says that "to maximize its relevance in the 21st century, liberal arts must progress with tomorrow’s technological advances. I look forward to expanding and cultivating these new and enterprising arenas."
