Family Weekend Means Family Fun

Families of current and future Georgia Tech students will get a taste of campus life during Family Weekend 2005 on Sept. 16 and 17.

The weekend starts with a slate of stimulating seminars and is full of exciting events through to the Yellow Jackets vs. Connecticut Huskies football game Saturday night.

"Whether this is your first time visiting Tech with your student or you come back every year, we have something for everyone," said Kara Allen, director of events for the Georgia Tech Alumni Association. "From our seminars to reception at the Campus Recreation Center to the tailgate just for Family Weekend participants, this will be a weekend you don’t want to miss."

Friday’s seminars at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center and the Global Learning Center in Technology Square will cover topics from Paul Hewitt’s update on men’s basketball to a presentation by Tech’s award-winning mock trial team to informational sessions about career services and graduate school programs.

Bus tours of campus will be held throughout the day Friday and departments across campus will host receptions for students and their families in the afternoon.

Friday evening a reception for all students and their families will be held at the new Campus Recreation Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will feature tours of the state-of-the-art facility and an exhibition by Tech’s diving team. Later, a murder mystery dinner theater performance of "Till Death Do Us Part" by the DramaTech theater troupe will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

On Saturday, walking tours of campus will leave from the Tech Tower lawn at 10 and 11 a.m. A pregame tailgate party also begins at 4:15 p.m. on the Tech Tower lawn and will continue until game time. Families can pose for a photo with the Ramblin’ Wreck, hear live music, eat barbecue and root for the Yellow Jackets with the Georgia Tech band and cheerleaders.

"Family Weekend is traditionally one of our largest events and we invite everyone to join us again this year," said Alumni Association President Joe Irwin.
