Buzz Bash Is Homecoming Hit
Buzz Bash, the third annual all-alumni party, has quickly become a Homecoming favorite. The Oct. 25 event featuring entertainment, great food and a fabulous fireworks display will be held in the festival area at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. and end with the fireworks show at 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person, $15 for Georgia Tech students and faculty/staff and free for children 12 and under. Cleared for Takeoff
Alumna Sandra H. Magnus will be aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis when it blasts off in early October on a mission to the International Space Station orbiting 122 nautical miles above the earth. Mission Specialist Magnus, PhD 96, Tech's third female astronaut, will be part of a six-member crew delivering a 360-foot-long truss that will connect two pressurized cabin modules.

Civic Duties Keep Clough Busy
Georgia Tech president Wayne Clough has been in high demand by the city, state and nation this summer. In August he was asked by President George Bush to participate in a one-day national economic forum.

Tech Revisits 9/11
A roundtable discussion, "Reconsidering September 11," will be held Sept. 3 at 11:15 a.m. at the Clary Theatre in the Bill Moore Success Center. Hosted by the Ivan Allen College and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, topics include the U.S. security and vulnerability, critical infrastructure and multilateralism.

Tech Graduate Named Top Hispanic Engineer
Liliana Maldonado, MS 80, has been selected to receive the 2002 Hispanic Engineers National Achievement Award in the professional achievement in industry category.

Smart Book, Dumb Laws
Georgia Tech freshman Andy Powell arrived on campus already a published author. The 18-year-old from Columbus, Ga., is the co-author of “You May Not Tie an Alligator to a Fire Hydrant: 101 Real Dumb Laws,” published in June.

Students Raise Funds for Korean Language Class
For several years, members of the Korean Student Association at Georgia Tech asked the School of Modern Languages to offer an introductory Korean language class, but there just was not enough money for it. Then Tech student Aaron Kim had a brainstorm. "What if we could raise the money ourselves?"

Energy Experts Convene at Georgia Tech
Former astronaut Richard Truly, AE 59, director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., will present the keynote address at the third annual Blue Skies Conference series sponsored by the Georgia Tech College of Engineering.

Students Design Safer Cell Phone
Two Georgia Tech students have designed a safer cell phone. Anish Buch and Neil Saunders, working together on a computer-aided design class project, developed a prototype cell phone that flips open at the press of a button, making the device easier and safer to use when driving or performing other activities.

High-speed Network Connects Tech to Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge National Laboratory's new computer link to the Georgia Tech is 200,000 times faster than the fastest dial-up connections typical of home computers and is expected to spur significant advances in science and economic development in the region and beyond.

Homecoming 2002
Homecoming Weekend is Oct. 24 to 26, with activities ranging from a wine-tasting reception Thursday night to Friday's festivities — including Lunch with the President and Buzz Bash — to Saturday's big game. There are activities and events to suit every fancy.

Georgia Tech's annual Family Weekend on Oct. 4 and 5 offers parents an opportunity to participate in campus activities with their children. Enjoy a concert featuring student musical groups, participate in information sessions on Tech life and attend the Tech-Wake Forest football game.

Associate Provost for Institutional Development Named
Jack Lohmann is Georgia Tech’s first associate provost for Institutional Development and chair of the newly created Council for Institutional and Academic Program Review and Accreditation.

DeMillo Named Computer Security Director
Richard A. DeMillo has been appointed director of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center and distinguished professor of computing. DeMillo, a former vice president at Hewlett Packard, will direct the applied research, education and outreach activities of GTISC.

2003 Travel Adventures Preview Event
The Georgia Tech Alumni Association will present its travel destinations for 2003 during a preview event from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., on Sept. 7 at the Alumni/Faculty House, 190 North Ave. A breakfast reception followed by presentations by tour operators will take place. Jackets, Commodores Open 2002 Football Season
Georgia Tech and Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt kicked off the 2002 season in a freshly renovated and expanded Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field. Tech and the Commodores met for the first time since 1967 when the Jackets won 17-10.

Graham Named to ACC 50th Anniversary Men's Cross Country Squad
The lone All-American in Georgia Tech men's cross country history, Kevin Graham, was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary Men's Cross Country Team.

Six Former Jackets Named To ACC 50th Anniversary Volleyball Team
Former Yellow Jacket standouts Kerry Annel, Carla Gartner, Rochelle Komula, Andrea Nachtrieb, Cris Omiecinski and Maja Pachale were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th Anniversary Volleyball Team.
