Chameau Begins Duties as Provost; Davidson Interim Dean
After serving more than three years as the College of Engineering dean, Jean-Lou Chameau assumes his new post as Institute provost and vice president for academic affairs on June 1 and J. Narl Davidson repeats his performance as interim engineering dean.

Roll Call Nearing $8.2 Million Goal
As the 54th Roll Call moves toward the June 30 finish line, alumni donations continue to push the annual Georgia Tech Alumni Association fund-raising campaign closer to its $8.2 million goal.

$4.25 Million Award Bolsters Hispanic Programs
Georgia Tech, one of the largest producers of Hispanic engineers in the world, will increase its recruitment and retention efforts of Hispanic students thanks to a $4.25 million gift from The Goizueta Foundation.

Up, Up and Away
Michael J. Massimino, an associate professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, is on leave from his teaching and research responsibilities while preparing for his Nov. 19 launch on the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Fulbright Winner
Alumnus Henry Hipps has been awarded a 2001-2002 Fulbright graduate fellowship. Hipps, MS ChE 98, is a consultant for IBM Global Services' enterprise applications services division and his specialty is international trade. Hipps has served on the Georgia Tech Alumni Association Minority Affairs Committee executive board and was president of the Black Graduate Student Association at Tech. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994.

Tough Row to Hoe
Georgia Tech issued 1,580 diplomas at the 209th commencement May 5, the largest ceremony on record. Alumni Association president Dave McKenney quizzed graduates about their experience, and through a show of hands, most rated their stay at Tech as a tough one.

Career Development Seminar Examines Changing Job Market
John Hannabach of Right Management Consultants and a former director of Career Services at Georgia Tech will conduct a seminar on June 14 to help alumni adapt to a changing job market. The free seminar, "Preparing Yourself — A Proactive Approach to a Changing Job Market," is sponsored by the Alumni Association's Career Development office. It will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Alumni Faculty House.

Volunteer for Tech
Georgia Tech is looking for alumni volunteers! Opportunities include: working with students, networking with other alumni, mentoring and serving in leadership roles on alumni committees. Please take a moment to complete our short survey and let us know your interests.

Space Construction
A team of Georgia Tech aerospace students is testing a new micro-gravity manufacturing process called "acoustic shaping" that turns sounds waves into construction machines. The team's initial findings indicate that sound could one day be used in space to build complex structures — such as space stations — from simple raw materials.

Al West's Success
Al West, AE 64, has been chief executive officer of the financial services firm SEI Investments for 33 years. By learning from other people's failures, West transformed the small two-person operation into a 1,000-employee company with a $3 billion market cap. During his tenure, he kept his salary low and his equity stake high, making him the fifth-most valuable executive on Forbes.com's list of Best Value Bosses.

Who'll Save the Rain?
In recent years, certain regions of the country have experienced drought conditions. Thirty-one states have implemented drought management plans, five of which attack the situation proactively, rather than emphasizing emergency response. Georgia will soon be among the proactive because of planning by state officials and a team of scientists led by a Georgia Tech professor.

Athlon Sports Ranks Georgia Tech in Top 20
Goose will be at the helm. Wide receivers Kelly Campbell and Kerry Watkins are ready for action and tailback Joe Burns will be running behind three returning offensive line regulars. Nine starters are back on defense, including end Greg Gathers, who finished third in the nation last season with 13 sacks. So why are Tech faithful so miffed?

Golfers Go For the Gold
The second-ranked Georgia Tech men's golf team will be one of the first teams to begin its quest for an NCAA Championship as the NCAA announced first- and second-round tee times for next week's Men's Golf Championships in Durham, N.C. The 72-hole event will be contested at the 7,088-yard, par-72 Duke University Golf Club.

Season's End
Georgia Tech's baseball team took a bitter loss in its final game, losing to arch-rival Georgia in the first round of the NCAA regional playoffs.

Continuing Education Offers Discounts to Alumni
The Georgia Tech Continuing Education program is offering alumni a 10 percent discount for more than 300 professional development courses.The discounts are available for courses in the College of Computing, Wesley Center for New Media, energy, quality and Center for Manufacturing Information Technology.

Roll Call Update
The 54th Roll Call has raised $6,015,696 as of May 23, about 73 percent of the $8.2 million goal. Donations to date have been made by 23,279 alumni and friends - 88 percent of the participation goal of 26,489 donors.
