Clough Calls Campaign 'Unmitigated Success'
Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough announces the five-year Campaign for Georgia Tech is an "unmitigated success," raising $711,973,834 — more than $100 million above its $600 million goal. Alumni contributed $344,849,929 or 48.4 percent of the campaign total.
Tech Getting Unplugged
Georgia Tech is going from wired to wireless. Tech is changing from a traditional "hardwired" network that is currently the mainstay of local area networks to a wireless network it calls LAWN — local area wireless/walkup network.
Bioinformatics Opens Doors to Discovery
Bioinformatics enables scientists to manage the incredible amount of data coming from genetic research and then mine it for valuable discoveries to aid in diagnosing, treating and preventing disease. The pioneering work of Georgia Tech professor Mark Borodovsky is helping develop the bioinformatics industry. "Bioinformatics is the future of life sciences," says Borodovsky, who created GeneMark, one of the most accurate software programs for finding genes in genomic DNA sequences.
Tech Stadiums To Get a Face-lift
The Georgia Tech Athletic Association announced a $70 million expansion and renovation of Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field and Russ Chandler Stadium, Tech's baseball facility. The plans call for the expansion of Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field to 55,000 seats from its current capacity of 46,000 seats, and the reconstruction of Russ Chandler Stadium, which would provide 5,000 seats.
Career Conference
Alumni can register online now for the annual Georgia Tech Alumni Career Conference on Thursday, March 29, at the Cobb Galleria Center. Alumnus Chris Klaus, founder of Internet Security Systems, will be featured as a luncheon speaker. The event, including a boxed lunch, is free but alumni must sign up for the luncheon when registering online.
Call for Action
"You have the capacity to do great things but if the gift is buried, it doesn't do anyone any good," said Kweisi Mfume, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Kweise was the keynote speaker for Georgia Tech's annual ecumenical service on Jan. 14, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Celebrating Black History
The African American Student Union will hold a host of events celebrating Black History Month at Georgia Tech. From cultural classes to a discussion with an African American Entrepreneurship Panel, the month will be filled with entertaining and informative events. Homecoming 2001
Georgia Tech Homecoming will be held on Oct. 19 and 20. The theme for this year's Homecoming celebration is "You Are the Magic of Georgia Tech." On Friday night, Oct. 19, Buzz Bash will ready the crowd for the next day's Ramblin' Wreck parade, alumni breakfast, tailgate parties and the big game, this year against North Carolina State. Hosting reunion parties this year to mark 50, 40 and 25 years since "getting out" are the classes of 1951, '61 and '76.
Poets Corner
Thomas Lux, the first holder of the McEver Chair at Ivan Allen College's School of Literature, Communication and Culture, has arrived at Georgia Tech and is celebrating the work of Georgia poets. A poetry reading is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the 14th Street Playhouse, 173 14th St., Atlanta.
Back to School
Old-fashioned networking is a major attraction to Georgia Tech's executive master of science in management of technology program. It is designed specifically for busy professionals who want to upgrade their skills without interrupting their careers.
Women's Conference
Five outstanding Georgia Tech women will be recognized at the annual Women's Leadership Conference, Feb. 23 and 24.
No. 1 in Pre-season
Georgia Tech head baseball coach Danny Hall knows that seeing is believing. He also knows what can happen if you believe what you see. Last year, the Yellow Jackets won 50 games, the ACC regular and tournament championships and a NCAA regional title. Despite that, they failed to advance to college baseball's highest pinnacle — the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Staying Alive
The Georgia Tech men's and women's basketball teams are playing far beyond most people's expectations. Both teams are in the thick of the chase for berths in the NCAA tournament.
The Road to the Championship
After coming oh-so-close to winning a national championship last year, the Georgia Tech Ice Hockey team has the opportunity to win it this year on its home ice. The national tournament is being played in Atlanta in March, giving the Jackets a chance to win a national championship at home.
