Ten Receive Awards at Gold & White Honors
Seven alumni were recognized for their outstanding contributions and two faculty members and a longtime friend of Georgia Tech were named honorary alumni in the inauguration of a new Gold & White Honors ceremony March 20.

Career Conference Adapts to Meet Alumni Job Needs
The Georgia Tech Alumni Association is adapting its annual Career Conference to suit the needs of participants. A shaky economy and company layoffs mean many "older" workers will be at the 20th annual conference on April 3 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

Stadium Cracks Hinder Progress
The upper deck of the north stands of Bobby Dodd Stadium has been under construction since early December. The work is three weeks behind schedule due to hairline cracks discovered in the concrete support columns.

Register by April 4 for Pi Mile's Best Deal
It will cost more after April 4 to participate in a Georgia Tech tradition — the 31st annual George C. Griffin Pi Mile Road Race.

Freshman Congressmen Face Tough Issues
Two Georgia Tech alumni serving Georgia as freshman U.S. congressmen have entered the national political arena at a volatile time. Max Burns, IE 73, serves in Congress with fellow freshman Phil Gingrey, Chem 65, a former state senator who serves on the Armed Services and Science committees.

Flying on Paper Wings
Vicky Hsu could have spent her spring break vacation relaxing. Instead, the chemical engineering senior geared up for a high-flying week in the sand dunes of North Carolina, learning how to hang glide from the pros. She'll need the practice: On April 5, she'll pilot a homemade hang glider with wings made almost entirely of paper products.

Columnist Ivins Wins Ivan Allen Prize
Political columnist Molly Ivins received the 2003 Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Progress and Service during a stop at Georgia Tech on March 27. The prize was presented as part of the Ivan Allen College's Founder's Day celebration.

Cremins Takes the Court Again
Georgia Tech honored Bobby Cremins, the winningest basketball coach in school history, by naming the hardwood at Alexander Memorial Coliseum "Cremins Court" following the Yellow Jackets' final home basketball game of the season against Clemson.

Talking About the Future
Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough led a discussion with alumni, faculty and students on March 28 about the direction Tech will take in the next 50 years.

New Whistle for Campus
The whistle that sounds the beginning and end of each class might soon have a different pitch to it. GTRI Machine Services has built a new whistle to succeed the present one mounted atop the A.C. Holland Power Plant.

Clearing the Air
Dirty air in Georgia is not just an Atlanta thing anymore. Poor air quality, once a problem only in the metropolitan area, is on the rise across middle Georgia but by next year, senior research scientist Michael Chang hopes to begin helping clear the polluted skies of the Piedmont.

Distance Learning, Professional Education Merge
The Distance Learning and Professional Education divisions at Georgia Tech have merged into one department — Distance Learning and Professional Education — to reflect the impact technology is having on education.

Learning Center Opens
The R. Kirk Landon Learning Center, providing care for the children in the communities of Home Park and Georgia Tech, received an officious dedication on March 12, attended by a lot of grown-ups — including Landon, IM 50, and Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough.

Georgia Tech Receives Department of Defense Grants
Georgia Tech was one of 17 universities selected for research funding by the Department of Defense. The grants total about $8.5 million in 2003 and up to $17 million in 2004.
