Alumni Centennial Book Goes to Press

The anniversary book, "Ramblin' Wrecks from Georgia Tech," the centennial history of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, goes to press in October and will be available in November.

The coffee table edition of the book includes a 24-minute companion DVD, "TechTone News," presented in the format of old Movietone newsreels, and preserves historical moments at Georgia Tech.

The centennial book, celebrating 100 years of a remarkable Ramblin' Wreck tradition, and its companion DVD will be available in mid-November. The Alumni Association received its charter in 1908.

"This commemorative book and DVD set make an ideal gift and will be available in plenty of time for the holidays," said Alumni Association President Joseph P. Irwin.

"'Ramblin' Wrecks from Georgia Tech' will be a collector's edition with a limited press run based on advance sales," Irwin said. "We have no plans for additional press runs, so this will be a one-time offer."

Those planning to purchase books as holiday gifts should order now, he said.

"Our history is about our alumni — how they came together to found the Association and how they persevered to hold it together during two world wars and the Great Depression. It's the story of some of our greatest personalities, who have helped shape and guide the Association," Irwin said.

The DVD will feature film clips of Georgia Tech's presidents and remarkable events of each decade the Alumni Association has served the Institute and its alumni.

"We have been able to capture some of Tech's remarkable and colorful personalities or legends — Dean George Griffin, coach Bobby Dodd, drownproofing champion Freddy Lanoue, golfing great Bobby Jones, former Mayor Ivan Allen and others," said Marilyn Somers, director of the Alumni Association's Living History program, whose department created the DVD.

"We also cover such historical matters as women being admitted to Tech and integration," Somers said.

Advance orders are $29.95, a savings of $10 off the cover price. Advance copies for this collector's edition may be reserved at gtalumni.org/centennialbook.
