Stumpy's Bear Roams Through Tech Legends, Traditions

When Stumpy Thomason's bear roamed the Georgia Tech campus, Dean of Students George Griffin quipped the bear was as smart as most Tech students with all the bad habits of modern youth.

The bear's favorite beverage was beer. Coca-Cola was a close second.

The true story of Stumpy's bear is featured among the many colorful legends and traditions that are part of Tech's history.

And Tech is steeped in tradition.

Ever wonder when was the first Ramblin' Wreck parade was held? How did the George P. Burdell legend start? The answers and the story of Stumpy's bear may be found online at http://gtalumni.org/techtraditions/.

Marilyn Somers, director of Living History for the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, researched and wrote "Ramblin Memories" and Tech computational media students Alex West and Heather Pritchard compiled the graphics.

"Georgia Tech's history and traditions are so rich that we know the new site is not comprehensive but we feel that it is a good start to build on and we hope visitors find it entertaining and useful," Somers said.
