Ben Mathis is Alumni Volunteer of the Year

Ben Mathis, IM 81, president of the Marietta Georgia Tech Club, received the Ramblin' Wreck Volunteer of the Year award at the 2006 Leadership Georgia Tech conference on Sept. 22.

"The Ramblin' Wreck Volunteer of the Year award is awarded to the Georgia Tech alumnus who has demonstrated dedication to Georgia Tech through a variety of volunteer roles and activities," Alumni Association President Joe Irwin, IM 80, said. "Ben has been the driving force in activating the Marietta club, serving as president the last three years. Last year the club moved to a tier one status and continues to be one of our top clubs largely because of Ben's tireless efforts."

The Best Friend of Georgia Tech award was presented to Fran Kimer of the Triangle Georgia Tech Club for her volunteer work.

Twenty-one clubs reached tier one status: Birmingham, Ala.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Colorado; Emerald Coast; Golden Isles, Ga.; Greater Cincinnati; Heart of Texas; Houston; Jacksonville, Fla.; Marietta, Ga.; Midlands; Nashville; North Alabama; North Metro Atlanta; Northeast Tennessee; Orange County, Calif.; Palm Beaches, Fla.; Suncoast, Fla; Triangle; Washington, D.C.; and Western North Carolina.

"Our alumni leaders at clubs around the country carry the flag for Georgia Tech in extraordinary ways," Irwin said. "From student recruiting to fundraising for scholarships and Roll Call to simply building pride and spirit for Georgia Tech, they're talented and devoted and Tech is the beneficiary of their hard work. Our institution is very lucky to have alumni who care passionately about it."

The "Highway to Success" conference Sept. 21-22 got off to a good start Thursday night with the Yellow Jacket football team's 24-7 drubbing of the University of Virginia.

Friday morning Alumni Association Chair Janice Wittschiebe, Arch 78, M Arch 80, welcomed the delegates to a day of seminars on management skills, use of technology, communication skills, budgets and planning, club scholarships and event planning.

In the keynote address, Georgia Tech Foundation chair Don Chapman, IM 61, said that continual investment in Georgia Tech at this critical time in its history is paramount.

"Strong volunteer leadership within the Alumni Clubs provides a strong foundation and essential communications for sharing the Georgia Tech story," he said. "Roll Call support allows for the greatest flexibility for Dr. Clough to invest in new initiatives, including recruiting the best and brightest faculty and providing cutting-edge facilities and innovative academic resources. As Georgia Tech continues to grow and innovate and educate students who will make a positive impact in the world, we have a duty to provide our students with the resources they need to compete in the global economy."
