Fall Magazine Covers History

Digging for answers to fluctuating prices at the pump? The volatile energy market and the nation's dependence on petroleum has sparked a spectrum of research at Georgia Tech — and the Fall Alumni Magazine cover story, "Cheap Oil is History."

"There are those who say we will keep finding oil as long as we're looking for it, and through advances in technology and the use of what they call 'unconventional petroleum,' we will continue to grow our reserves. And then there's the rest of us, who think we're reaching the peak," says Marilyn Brown, a professor in the School of Public Policy.

Meanwhile, James D. Meindl is shining bright at Georgia Tech. Profiled in "Wizard of Watts," Meindl, director of the Microelectronics Research Center, has been rewarded this year with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Medal of Honor and with the job as the first director of the Nanotechnology Research Center, scheduled to open on the Tech campus in 2008.

While "Wizard of Watts" explores a career that has spanned half a century, President Wayne Clough journeys back in time to a culture that began in 5000 B.C. "A Celtic Journal" recounts the Tech president's Alumni Travel trip, explains the history of the Celts and delves into his own Celtic heritage.

Readers can travel to Italy with alumna Susan Evans, who bought a dilapidated 17th century villa inhabited by sheep, pigs and chickens. "Bella Umbria" tells the story of the villa's restoration and its transformation into a business, Il Gusto del Paese — a taste of the country. Evans provides that taste of Umbria by opening the villa to paying guests.

Elsewhere in the Fall issue are responses to a global warming letter that sparked heated reaction, a profile of Tom DeLoach's team-building approach at Pit Crew U and an interview with Dean Richard DeMillo that looks at the "new face of computing."
