A display of 2,996 American flags, one for each life lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, lined Skiles walkway.

A flag memorial and remembrance service was held on the fifth anniversary of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people. A flag was placed on Skiles lawn representing each life that was lost in the attacks. A moment of silence was observed on campus at noon Sept. 11 and a remembrance ceremony was held at 6 p.m. at the Kessler Campanile.

Three alumni were killed in the attacks.

Carl Max Hammond Jr., Phys 87, of New Hampshire, was aboard United flight 175, one of the two hijacked aircraft that crashed into the World Trade Center.

Mike Gann, IM 85, of Roswell, Ga., who was in New York on business, was trapped on the 106th floor of the first of the twin towers hit by hijacked aircraft. He called his wife, Robin. "He told me to turn on the TV. He said there was a fire, that a plane had hit the building. He said he thought he was stuck and wouldn't get out."

Murray Greer Jr., IM 62, of Maryland, died in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Greer worked for a firm that dealt mainly with the Navy and Department of Defense.
