In the early days of Georgia Tech football, the team was often referred to as Blacksmiths, Techity Techs, Tech Boys and sometimes even Yellow Jackets. But legendary football coach John Heisman changed that.
In an Atlanta Constitution article printed Oct. 29, 1905, Heisman announced that he wanted the Tech team referred to only as the Yellow Jackets.
The first newspaper cartoon referring to Georgia Tech's football team as the Yellow Jackets appeared 100 years ago on Nov. 7, 1906. The Atlanta Journal illustration depicted a yellow jacket threatening a Georgia football player and warning, "Somebody's going to get stung."
The colors varied too. Tech's colors of white and gold were often displayed as white and yellow. Tech teams often wore yellow jerseys back in those early days because gold-colored fabric was not available.
Through the years, the yellow jacket mascot has evolved into its modern version — the saucy, irreverent and lovable Buzz.
