Alumnus Christopher W. Klaus, who donated $15 million for construction of a complex devoted to advanced computing and technology, will officially open the building bearing his name at 2 p.m. Oct. 26.
The Christopher W. Klaus Advanced Computing Building — housing some of the most advanced computing labs and innovative educational technology in the world — features more than 70 laboratories, eight computer class labs, a 200-seat auditorium and a three-story underground parking deck. More than 50 percent of the six-acre site is earmarked for green space, including a storm water collection system to provide water for irrigation and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems that will save up to $200,000 annually.
"The Klaus building is a gateway to the new center of campus and represents the prominence and importance of new technologies at Georgia Tech," Richard DeMillo, dean of the College of Computing, said. "In addition to housing some of the best computing labs and educational technology in the world, the building reflects what Chris Klaus is all about — he is an entrepreneur and a collaborator. This is a building that was designed specifically to support collaboration and entrepreneurship. The Klaus Advanced Computing Building is about the technology and about how the technology is going to advance and make an impact on the world."
While a student at Tech, Klaus founded Internet Security Systems to provide the technology to protect digital assets and ensure safe e-business. In August, IBM bought ISS for $1.3 billion.
