The largest crowds ever are expected to visit the Georgia Tech campus in October as thousands of alumni return for Homecoming and thousands of parents and family members join their students for Family Weekend.
Alumni will return for reunions and to reminisce and for fun and football during Homecoming Weekend Oct. 26-28. President Wayne Clough will present the State of the Institute address to alumni during the event-filled three-day celebration.
Family Weekend will be Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7.
"Each year we strive to provide families with an opportunity to not only connect with their loved ones, but also to experience firsthand the energy and breadth of Georgia Tech's academic and extracurricular life," said Janice Wittschiebe, Arch 78, M Arch 80, chair of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association.
The family event is a crowd-pleaser that has a slate of informative seminars on Friday as well as college and school receptions, a Family Weekend Festival, a sold-out murder mystery dinner, a concert and a movie on the lawn at Yellow Jacket Park. A family tailgate party will take place before Tech's football game with Maryland.
Homecoming Weekend kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center with a wine-tasting seminar featuring wines from South Africa, Argentina, Spain and Portugal.
Friday, Oct. 27 includes stimulating seminars and campus tours in the morning and early afternoon. Clough will give the State of the Institute address at 3:30 p.m. in the Global Learning Center.
In the evening, experience "Buzz Bash Carnivale: Imagination Becomes Reality," an all-alumni party under the west stands of Bobby Dodd Stadium featuring food, refreshments, acrobats and contortionists and a spectacular fireworks finale.
Also on Friday, the classes of 1956, 1966 and 1981 observe milestone reunions.
The Ramblin' Wreck parade, a Tech tradition since 1932, rolls down Fowler Street at 8 a.m. Saturday. The alumni tailgate party will be held on the Tech Tower lawn two hours before kickoff of the football game against Miami. The Old Gold Reunion for classes prior to 1956 will be held immediately after the game at the Alumni House ballroom.
