Reunion Classes Contribute $11.5 million

Class of 1956

The milestone reunion classes presented more than $11.5 million to President Wayne Clough for Georgia Tech projects during Homecoming 2006.

The Class of 1956 raised $5.6 million, including $250,000 for the Fifth Street bridge trellis project. Committee co-chairs were Jere Goldsmith IV and Oliver Sale Jr. Harriet Harris was an honorary member.

The Fifth Street bridge project includes the creation of a pedestrian-friendly park setting over the Downtown Connector that links the east side of the Georgia Tech campus with Technology Square. The trellis is being constructed of welded tubular steel with a stainless steel net for support of the landscape elements. A seating wall will be built beneath the trellis.

Other members of the Class of 56 reunion fund committee were Bill All III, Ray Anderson, Harrold Bowen, John Burson III, Dick DeVane Jr., Roland Fuentes, Richard Guthman Jr., Elizabeth Herndon, Jim Hickerson, Frank Holberg III, Allen Ivey, Mansfield Jennings Jr., Hal Marcus Jr., Duke Mewborn II, Jack Perryman, Jack Pruitt Jr., Bill Schaffer, Joe Taylor, Frank E. Williams Jr., Kelley Williams and Ted Wirtz.

The Class of 1966 raised $4 million, with $200,000 earmarked for the President's Scholarship Program.

"The main objective of the President's Scholarship Program at Georgia Tech is to enroll the best undergraduates in the nation," said Randy McDow, director of the program and associate director of Enrollment Services.

The average SAT score of the 2006 President's Scholarship recipients was 1508, with an average grade point average of 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Ken Byers chaired the Class of 1966 reunion fund committee. He was joined by committee members Henry E. Bowden, Drew Case, Marc Dash, Tom Gay, Bernie Grablowsky, John Higley Jr., Gordon Keiser Jr., Jim Letson, Lou Long, Bruce McEver, Bill Moorer Jr., Jim Simmons, Ross Stevens, Howard Tellepsen Jr., Bill H. Vernon Sr., Phil Vincent and Charles Wands.

The Class of 1981 raised $1,981,000 for its 25th reunion. The Class of 1981 Public Service Student Endowment will receive $150,000. Specifically benefiting from the endowment will be TEAM Buzz, a community service day conducted by Tech alumni across the nation. Since its inception 10 years ago, TEAM Buzz has grown to include more than 2,000 volunteers working on 50 community service projects.

For the 25th reunion fund committee, Noelle Marier Cardell and Jack Markwalter Jr. served as the Class of 1981 co-chairs. Committee members were Jeff A. Cardell, Barry C. Davis, Steve Jensen, Wayt King Jr., Ken Klaer, Gary Lanier, Fredda Lerner-Fischbein, Scott Petty, Marcus H. Sachs, Al Trujillo and Frank E. Williams III.
