Homecoming 2005
![]() John E. Anderson greets friends at 50th reunion Thousands of alumni swarmed back for Homecoming weekend to celebrate reunions, attend the president's State of the Institute address, participate in stimulating seminars, tailgate and watch the Yellow Jackets triumph over Clemson 10-9 in a hard-fought gridiron battle. Buzz Bash observed a "spooktacular" haunted Homecoming where the grim reaper welcomed alumni into the creepy festival area of Bobby Dodd stadium. Young alumni gathered in the loft. Fireworks were back and lit up the night sky over Grant Field. Meade Sutterfield, EE 72, vice chairman of activities for the Alumni Association, was Homecoming chairman. Alumnus Larry Huang, IM 73, took alumni on a thrill ride as the speaker at the keynote seminar "From North Avenue to Professional Sports Car Racing - The Journey of Larry Huang." Though the lens of a video camera mounted behind the headrest of his 250-horsepower Radical racer, the audience rode with Huang at more than 150 miles per hour through the sharp turns and fast straights of Road America raceway. The classes of 1980, 1965 and 1955 observed milestone anniversaries on Oct. 29. The newly chartered Georgia Tech Black Alumni Organization attracted about 250 members at its gathering, including special guest Ronald Yancey, EE 65, of Columbia, Md., the Institute's first black graduate. "From the beginning with the keynote of Larry Huang to this year's edition of the alumni seminars to the Old Gold Society reunion, Homecoming was an outstanding experience topped off with a victory over Clemson. It doesn't get much better," said Alumni Association President Joseph P. Irwin, IM 80. Kara Allen, director of Events, said Homecoming is the largest alumni event during the year and Buzz Bash, in its sixth year, has become established as an exciting new tradition. |
