Aerospace Chair Stepping Down

Professor Robert G. Loewy, William R.T. Oakes chair of the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering since 1993, will retire in June.

"Bob's knowledge and expertise, along with his strong commitment and dedication to the School of Aerospace Engineering, will be sorely missed. His shoes will be hard to fill," said Don Giddens, dean of the College of Engineering.

Loewy told the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine in 2003, "Aerospace is a very exciting and stimulating field. Something new is happening all the time. It's a field that plays a very important role for the benefit of society."

Loewy graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. He earned a master's from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

From 1948 to 1962, Loewy worked in industry, for the Glenn L. Martin Co.; Piasecki Helicopter Corp.; Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory; and Vertol Aircraft Corp., which later became a division of the Boeing Company. In 1965-66, he was chief scientist for the Air Force.

As a faculty member at the University of Rochester, Loewy was a professor of mechanical and aerospace sciences, director of the Space Science Center and dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

He returned to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as provost and professor of aeronautical engineering and mechanics in 1974. He later founded the Rotorcraft Technology Center at the institute and served as its director.
