Crew Strikes Gold Again

Georgia Tech's men's varsity lightweight eight crew won a second consecutive gold medal in the Dad Vail Regatta — collegiate rowing's biggest event — held May 11-12 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. This is the fourth consecutive year that a Tech crew has brought home a gold medal.

Tech rowers John Kapteyn, Cameron Troxel, Elijah Holsenbeck, Michael Wildes, Nick Grivas, Cody Kamin, Michael Pieper, Vincent Wilkes and coxswain Theresa Mara defeated crews from Northwestern, Mercyhurst, St. Joseph, Grand Valley State and Jacksonville to win the Thomas Loschiavo Trophy by 1.5 seconds.

Yellow Jacket rowers won silver medals in women's varsity pair, men's varsity heavyweight four and men's freshman novice lightweight eight.

"It was a special moment winning a gold medal for the fourth straight year," men's head coach Rob Canavan said. "And the eight-man races are really the main events so winning back-to-back golds in lightweight varsity eight brings a special prestige to our team."

The Yellow Jackets finished second to Purdue for the Thomas Kerr Trophy, awarded to the men's crew with the highest overall points total.
