Golf Team Featured in Summer Magazine
![]() Bruce Heppler Kick back in July with the Summer edition of the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine, due to hit mailboxes next week. Golf coach Bruce Heppler, who is pictured on the cover, may surprise readers with at least one of the characteristics he looks for when recruiting players. Georgia Tech has a long history of golfing greatness, and a timeline traces a few of the magic moments captured by names like Jones, Gunn, Yates, Cink, Duval and Kuchar. Although the team has never won a national championship, a number of factors have made Tech's program the best in the country according to two golf magazines. Thomas L. Friedman's best-selling book "The World Is Flat" recently got a little fatter. The expanded edition includes a section on "Tubas and Test Tubes" that trumpets the achievements of President Wayne Clough and the Institute's students as it highlights Tech's approach to education in the 21st century. It's been 10 years since the summer that changed Atlanta — and Georgia Tech — forever. The Institute played an instrumental role in winning the 1996 Summer Olympic Games for Atlanta. A look back illustrates how the Institute wowed the International Olympics Committee with its technological know-how. The Georgia Tech Auto Show took car lovers on a nostalgic trip back a lot farther than a decade ago. "Romancing the Roadster" is packed with photos of the timeless classics and modern marvels that attracted more than 2,000 people, including alumnus Franco Cimatti, who brought a few Ferraris with him from Italy. Elsewhere in the Summer edition, professor Danny Boston discusses how he and the field of economics both have changed and Sam Shelton, founding director of the Strategic Energy Initiative, answers questions about foreign oil, natural gas and alternative fuels. The Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine is distributed quarterly to Roll Call donors.
