Senate Approves Defense Job

The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Georgia Tech alumnus John J. Young Jr. as the under secretary of the Department of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.

President George W. Bush nominated Young, AE 85, for the post, the third-ranking position in the Defense Department. The Senate voted to confirm Young's appointment in mid-November.

Young had served as acting under secretary since the July resignation of Kenneth J. Krieg. Previously, Young was the department's director of defense research and engineering. His responsibilities in that role included oversight of federally funded research and development centers, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Defense Technical Information Center.

He formerly was the assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition as well as a professional staff member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

A native of Newnan, Ga., Young was an intern for Sam Nunn, Cls 60, during his tenure in the Senate.
