Bioinformatics Star Joins Faculty
![]() Jeffrey Skolnick, who headed a $200 million bioinformatics research center at the University of Buffalo, is joining the Georgia Tech faculty and bringing 19 researchers and a $1.5 million research grant with him. Skolnick, a systems biologist, uses supercomputers to break down information in the genetic code in order to create new drugs. "Skolnick is an acclaimed figure in the highly competitive field of bioinformatics," said Gary Schuster, dean of the College of Sciences. "His team will make important discoveries that will pay off in societal benefits in the fight against diseases like cancer." Skolnick is the 51st scholar recruited by the Georgia Research Alliance, a nonprofit corporation made up of business and university leaders that fosters the growth of biotech start-ups. President Michael Cassidy, MS TASP 87, said GRA will pay for part of Skolnick's $2 million endowed chair at Tech. The state will pick up a $5 million tab for computers and specialized laboratory equipment Skolnick needs for his research. |
