Guthman Keyboard Competition Hits Anniversary

Ten years ago alumnus Richard Guthman endowed the Margaret A. Guthman Keyboard Competition at Georgia Tech. Today it attracts more than five dozen participants.

The two categories of competition are classical and jazz/contemporary in two divisions: high school and college. The awards offer a $5,000 grand prize in honor of the late College of Architecture Dean Thomas Galloway and $10,000 in additional awards.

The competition will be held Feb. 22 and 23 in the Couch Music Building on campus. The deadline for online application is Feb. 15.

Last year the competition was covered by Georgia Public Broadcasting, which televised the event in four programs, two in August and two in September.

Frank Clark, director of the Music Department, sees the keyboard competition as complementary to Tech's music program. "The relationship between the arts and engineering is as old as Western philosophy," he said.

Guthman, IE 56, a member of the Alumni Association board of trustees, endowed the competition in honor of his wife, Margaret.

"It's been so much fun just to watch this grow and these kids are so talented," said Margaret Guthman, who is a pianist herself.

"There are very few jazz competitions in this country, although there are plenty of classical competitions," she said. "We have both.

"Jazz has been a longtime love of mine," she said. "Both classical and jazz are fun because they are so diverse. They are so opposite from each other. When we are doing two competitions, we have classical going at one end of the building and jazz going on at the other. In two days, 60 or 65 people play."
