So, what's your emotional IQ got to do with getting the best job for you?
How polished are your networking skills?
What's the secret to a successful career?
There are no secrets — only answers — at the Alumni Career Fair and Conference March 28 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta sponsored by the Georgia Tech Alumni Association.
Workshops are designed to help you launch your career with the best job or to make a satisfying career move. You'll get professional advice on putting your best foot forward.
Many alumni have already taken the first step and put their best foot in the door for the annual event, now in its 24th year. Alumni may register for the conference by visiting http://gtalumni.org/CCAlumni. The deadline for registration is 8 a.m. March 21. Companies interested in registering may visit http://gtalumni.org/CCEmployer for more information.
"The educational components that the conference incorporates into the day — speakers, workshops, activities — can be valuable to you no matter what your situation is," said Caroline Taylor, the Alumni Association's senior manager of Career Services and Networking.
An 8 a.m. workshop and breakfast address, "Emotional Intelligence: Foundation for Your Future," will feature Brent Darnell, ME 81, whose firm, Brent Darnell & Associates, specializes in helping technical professionals improve their people skills.
Many technical professionals have no trouble moving up in a company but eventually reach a point where they can no longer rely on their technical abilities alone to succeed, said Darnell, who stresses the importance of social competence, listening skills and emotional intelligence in climbing the career ladder. The breakfast cost is $10.
Walt Ehmer, IE 89, president and chief operating officer of Waffle House, will present a luncheon address at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for the lunch are $10.
Alumni will meet with company representatives from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Companies will hold informal, on-site interviews with selected alumni from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
This year's conference also will feature an afternoon workshop, "Networking Your Way to a Better Career," from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., in which Len Contardo, vice president of Constituent Services for the Alumni Association, will offer advice to alumni on how to leverage their personal network of contacts. As the final session of the day, it's an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the conference and gain insight into how best to proceed in their job searches, Contardo said.
