Georgia Tech's young alumni are making faces on the Internet to connect with friends and former classmates.
A year ago, the Georgia Tech Young Alumni Council quietly started a page on Facebook, a social networking Web site that allows them to share information. More than 600 alumni have joined Tech's page without any promotion or advertisement.
"It's really amazing. What our young alumni and students tell us is that they don't want us to push the messages to them. They want to connect on their own. They just want us to facilitate and get out of the way," said Len Contardo, vice president of Constituent Services for the Alumni Association.
"That 600 number speaks to the power of viral marketing and the power of all of our young alumni being ambassadors for the Georgia Tech experience. It's a new model and it seems like it's working. There's an incredible potential there," Contardo said, adding that there are about 40,000 young Tech alumni who have graduated since 1990.
Lauren Pinson, MS IntA 05, of Washington, D.C., a member of the Young Alumni Council, started the Facebook page and manages it.
Connecting with one another is one of the goals of the Young Alumni Council, said Troy Rice, IE 01, president of the council and president of the Palm Beach, Fla., Georgia Tech Club. Rice served on the council last year when it launched the Facebook page.
Rice said the council has 31 active members who are creatively working to engage young alumni through meaningful and relevant programs. The council is planning a reunion for young alumni in May or June that would include a golf tournament and party.
