Head football coach Chan Gailey, who won more games than fans, was fired Nov. 26.
Athletics Director Dan Radakovich said a national search is under way to replace Gailey, who was "relieved of his duties" less than 48 hours after Tech lost to the University of Georgia at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
"My decision was based on whether the football program is moving forward and our fan base, as a whole, is sufficiently excited and energized by its direction," Radakovich said in a prepared statement.
The 11th head coach in Tech history, Gailey led the Yellow Jackets to a 44-32 record in six seasons and a bowl bid each year. Last season, the football team made it to the ACC championship game but lost to Wake Forest.
"This is a very proud institution with a deep and rich football tradition," Radakovich said. "Our alumni and fans are extremely supportive. We have asked, and are asking more and more of them, as we reach for excellence as a top-tier football program. They expect no less from us."
Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta has been named interim head coach.
During a press conference, Radakovich said there was no one moment that sealed Gailey's fate. "It was an evaluation of the entire year," said the athletics director, who discussed the decision with Tech President Wayne Clough the day after the 31-17 loss to Georgia.
"I want the best coach to fit here at Georgia Tech," said Radakovich, telling the media he is looking for someone skilled at recruiting and committed to academics. "There are people I would like to sit and speak with. ... It's more important to do it right than to do it fast."
