Golden Isles Club Wins Food Drive

The Golden Isles Georgia Tech Club and alumni clubs from Auburn and Georgia set aside their differences recently to compete in a collection drive for Amity House, a Brunswick, Ga., shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.

Boxes with each school's colors were displayed at local grocery stores for nearly three weeks in November and shoppers were encouraged to donate food and cleaning supplies to their school of choice. The winning club received two gift certificates for turkeys.

Georgia Tech trounced the competition collecting 740 pounds, followed by Auburn with 487 pounds and Georgia with 226 pounds — a total of 1,453 pounds of food and other needed items.

"This is wonderful; this is awesome," Charlotte Mullikin, executive director of Amity House, told the Brunswick News as the pile of donated items grew bigger. "If it wasn't for these donations, we would be paying more than $50,000 a year on food and supplies."

There was one more surprise in store. Chuck Carter, IM 74, representing the Golden Isles Club, donated the gift certificates to Amity House to buy Thanksgiving turkeys.
