Fifth Street Bridge Opens

The pedestrian-friendly Fifth Street Bridge crossing the Downtown Connector to link Georgia Tech's dynamic, historic campus with its thriving expansion at Technology Square is scheduled to officially open on Dec. 5.

The 10 a.m. grand opening will complete a project begun Sept. 21, 2004, when the Georgia Department of Transportation started removing and replacing the existing bridge crossing the Interstate 75/85 connector.

The unique pedestrian and vehicle bridge features wide promenades with trees and shrubbery intended to block out views and dampen the noise of the interstates.

The bridge is designed to encourage pedestrian traffic between the central campus and Technology Square. Trolleys also run between Midtown and the main Tech campus.

The bridge was built in stages that has kept it open during the construction period. Technology Square is the home of the College of Management, the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center, the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center and Barnes & Noble@ Georgia Tech bookstore.

Once only on paper, the pedestrian-friendly Fifth Street Bridge is now a reality.
