Most Influential Atlantans
![]() President Wayne Clough is one of the Georgia Tech alums recognized as an influential Atlantan. Nine Georgia Tech alumni are among those named to the Atlanta Business Chronicle's list of the "100 Most Influential Atlantans." Named to the 2007 list and the publication's reasons for their inclusion are: Jim Borders, ME 83, CEO of Novare Group Inc., "helped change the (Atlanta) skyline. Now he's changing the skylines of other cities." Former President Jimmy Carter, Cls 46, whose "vast influence was displayed during December's controversy over his newest book, 'Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.'" Wayne Clough, CE 64, MS CE 65, "has led Georgia Tech since 1994, helping keep Atlanta and Georgia on the cutting edge of technological evolution." Dennis Kelly, ME 76, is the president and CEO of Zoo Atlanta. "Other than dealing with panda-monium, Kelly has been busy with long-range planning for the zoo." Jim Lientz, IM 65, Georgia's first chief operating officer, "runs a $20 billion-a-year business called the state of Georgia. In other words, an operation nearly the size of The Coca-Cola Co." Sam Nunn, Cls 60, is co-chairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative. "North Korea conducts nuclear tests, and Iran refuses to halt its nuclear program. Events like these make all the more critical Sam Nunn's work at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, an organization which works to reduce threats from nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction." J. Michael Robison, Mgt 97, is the chairman and CEO of Lanier Parking Holdings, "but it's in his other roles as chairman of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau and a board member of Atlanta Streetcar Inc. that Robison wields influence." John A. Williams, IM 64, the founder of Post Properties Inc., "keeps making his mark on the city." He now is building The Mansion on Peachtree, a hotel/condominium tower in Buckhead, and the new Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Sam Williams, EE 68, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, "never shies from a tough assignment, and he always knows how to get the region's best leaders to roll up their sleeves and solve problems together." Seven of the alumni — Borders, Carter, Clough, Lientz, Nunn, Robison and Sam Williams — were on the 2006 list. |
