Earth Day Emphasizes Recycling
![]() Live music, recycling, an environmental maze and a T-shirt contest with a $500 prize are among the events planned for Georgia Tech's Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 on Skiles Walkway. Old sneakers, cell phones, office supplies and electronic waste are among the items being collected for recycling. Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program collects old tennis shoes to be ground up and used to make athletic surfaces like running tracks and basketball courts. An office supply exchange allows faculty, staff and students to recycle unused items like ink pens, paper or file folders. Supplies may be dropped off at the Office of Solid Waste Management & Recycling at 947 Atlantic Drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 13. Earth Day participants may then select items they can use. "The exchange is open to all Tech faculty, staff and students," recycling program manager Cindy Jackson said. "Everyone can enjoy no-charge shopping." Tech's Greek councils and Atlanta Recycling Solutions are collecting personal computers, printers, cell phones and any other electronic items that Earth Day participants wish to discard. "The electronic waste collected will only be personal items," Jackson said. "We can't accept any Georgia Tech equipment."
