Callaway Estate, Gardens Open to Public
![]() Hills and Dales, the 35-acre estate and gardens of the late Fuller E. Callaway Jr. in LaGrange, Ga., has opened to the public and includes a display of architectural drawings by Neel Reid made from the originals in the archives of Georgia Tech's College of Architecture. Reid's architectural drawings for the Italianate home were prepared in 1914 and copies are on display in the estate's visitor center. Callaway, Text 26, became chairman of Callaway Mills Co. in LaGrange. He was a longtime member of the Georgia Tech Foundation, a generous benefactor to the Institute and endowed four faculty chairs. He received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1949 and the Manufacturing Research Center is named in his honor. The Callaway home was given to the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation in 1998. The estate spans more than 170 years and blossomed when Sarah Ferrell expanded a small garden started by her mother into one of the most widely acclaimed gardens in the South. Fuller E. Callaway Sr., a successful textile manufacturer, purchased the estate in 1908 and commissioned the architectural firm of Hentz and Reid of Atlanta to design the home, which was completed in 1916. Callaway Jr. and his wife, Alice Hand, took over the care of the estate in 1936. For information visit www.hillsanddalesestate.org printer-friendly version of this article
