Alumnus Leads U.S. Team to Bronze in Paralympics

Mark Zupan, CE 99, scored 15 goals to lead the U.S. quad rugby team to a 43-39 victory over Great Britain for the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

The team’s efforts received a considerable amount of national media coverage with a story in the Christian Science Monitor and a feature story by ABC anchor Peter Jennings on “World News Tonight.”

Zupan, a scholarship soccer player at Florida Atlantic University, was left a quadraplegic after an auto accident in 1995. After months of rehabilitation, he transferred to Georgia Tech, where he began playing wheelchair rugby.

Zupan, 29, the U.S. Quad Rugby Association's 2003-04 Athlete of the Year, led all U.S. scoring in the Paralympics with 48 goals in six games.
